An aftershock can happen. May not happen at all in Rome, but we can't be too sure.
I have family in Rome and will let you know when I hear from them with more details. But as for now, my family in Rome say to stay away from there just in case.

You also can't be too sure the next shock won't hit California! Except for some minor damage to the Caracalla baths, I've not heard any reports of problems in Rome. To say Rome isn't safe for tourists seems to be overdoing it a fair bit.

I agree with Norm. If those of us in Earthquake-country let the potential threat of a potential earthquake or a potential aftershock rule our lives, we'd live in bunkers or something. It's a horrible tragedy and there's nothing more to add to that, but I certainly hope no one would stay out of Rome as a result. The next quake could come today or tomorrow or 100 years from now, there is no way to know.

I also agree. I think my family is just too careful.
If there is an aftershock, Rome could feel it, but I doubt it would be dangerous. I just got back from California, and didn't even think about earthquakes. The chances are so slim. During the big quake, Rome did feel it and buildings were shaking, but no damage or injuries that I know of at this time.

You can get the Italian perspective of this earthquake by typing corriere.it into your search engine and then translating the page. Pictures and stories show lots of damage. Very sad.

The Italian government is asking people to stay out of the earthquake zone, not Rome.

And this was the second earthquake in two days. The first was smaller and centered not far from Bologna.

Thousands of tents have been put up to help the victims but unfortunately they are crowded and without showers.

Yet Italian Prime Berlosconi thought it was terrific. "Just like camping," he said.
