Going to Germany in April and not sure if I should change money here in the US or wait until I get there. Last year we changed money at American Express before going and they gave us an exchange of 1-1.75 when the computer said the exchange was at 1-1.60. So I just wonder if it's better to wait and do it over there? Any suggestions?
I see this question about once every other week, so just search previous posts (click on previous pages instead of using search box). I'll bet you can find all the opinions you'd ever want on this subject, and more. Many people use an ATM upon landing in Europe, but quite a few also bring a small amount of starter cash (€) or emergency cash from the U.S.
Bring 100 euros from home justto get you started, but use atms rest of time. Doing this now for last 15 years or so.
Same as Lamont and Pat. Rick tells you what you need to know here Rick's Money 101
OK, I give up. Where is that "previous pages" icon, please?
Bill, scroll down to the bottom of the General Europe section and click on "next" where it says Page 1. That will take you to the previous page. (The list is in order with most recent post first, so older posts are farther back.) Just look through the listings till you find one of the many regarding getting euros in advance, taking money to Europe, changing money, using ATMs or various other variations of the topic.
Thank you, Nancy!
So I guess we should just take about 100 euros as starter cash and get the rest at atms in
germany? I just worry that the euro might get stronger. I know that it's at a pretty good rate right now. Last year we went to spain, italy, and france and the exchange was at 1.70, right before we left.
Lily, also, the Euro may get weaker against the dollar. If it does strengthen it won't be enough to offset the better exchange rate you will get from an ATM in Europe versus buying them here.
I always wait until I arrive and then head for the ATM at the airport. There always is at least one and the rate is much better.
