Everyone's feet are different, and everyone's idea of style is different.
I suggest you go to a good showstore like Nordstrom or The Walking Company and look around, try some on, and see what feels right and looks nice on your feet. I generally take Dansko Lolita sandals and a pair of Nike or Merrell cross trainers that I use for hiking and running. That is for summer. In April I would take one pair of sandals for good weather, and a pair of closed toe shoes for cooler weather. We saw quite a few women, both young women and stylish older women, wearing Converse low-tops in Spain last May, as well as in Italy the year before. But in Italy, especially Milan, you may also see young women riding bikes in 4-inch spike heels. Basically, anything goes. Choose what is best for you, make sure they are broken in, and do not limit yourself to one pair of shoes. Your feet need a break from even the best-fitting shoes if you are doing a lot of walking on city pavement and cobblestones.
