We have two half day's available for hikes with family at the end of May. Looking for a 2-4 hour hike, mod/easy, great views, and a beer hut or two if possible. Don't believe I want to cross the lake to hike since it will burn up to much time to get across and back. Hoping for some good suggestions. Thank Hank
Try hiking up Jenner. If you don't want to climb the whole thing, you can ride a ski lift halfway to just below the Alpine level. The hike is steep for short sections, but the terrain is not rough. There's a restaurant and viewing platforms on top, and if you don't want to walk down again, you can ride the ski lift all the way back down.
Plan a back up activity, we went to the Salt Mine. If you're lucky you will get great weather and views. It may be socked in, leaving you hiking without views or spending your time elsewhere. I've only been to Berchtesgaden once and it was cloudy/foggy the whole time. We weren't really interested in Nazi sights, or hiking unfamiliar trails in the fog, so cut our visit short and moved on.
Brad brings up a good point. The geography of Berchtesgaden (large lake in a cul de sac valley) makes it a little more prone to fog and clouds than some other Alpine destinations. Make sure you have a back-up activity.
