Best trip route for 14 days europe London-Italy

What would be the best route for a trip,14 days +- starting in London and ending in Rome. My son would really like to see a lot of Italy, but also wants to visit a few sights in London. He is 12 and we are planning for Fall 2011

What are you and your son interested in? Once you figure out what you want to do in Italy (I haven't been to London so I can't help you there), that should help narrow down your itinerary. Venice and Florence, along with Rome, are the heavyweight champs of Italy - awesome architecture and great museums. Venice and Florence are smaller than Rome and have more of a small-town feel - less traffic (esp. in Venice :) and quieter even during tourist season. Some small towns I liked are Ravenna (location of most of Italy's Byzantine churches), Lucca (beautiful town and home of Puccini, whose house you can tour), Verona (2,000-year-old arena and the balcony where people like to say that Juliet talked to Romeo), and Padua (St. Anthony's Church is pretty cool, and outside there's an equestrian statue by Donatello).

How many days are you thinking for each place you visit? If you're flying out of Rome, you don't have to worry about getting back to London so you can spend a little more time in each city or town. You can visit smaller towns in a day or less and I would suggest at least 2 days and 2 nights each in Venice, Florence, and Rome.
