Best travel agency for travelers with medical conditions? (Not interested in group tours)

Hi,

I'm desperately hoping to take my two teenage sons to Europe (Germany, Italy- primarily here, Switzerland, maybe France) in June. I have inflammatory arthritis that requires controlled medications and the boys both (12 & 14) have ADHD that also requires controlled medication. I don't feel confident in my ability to confirm what medications we can bring on my own, and would like to work with an agency that has medical contacts in case I run into a medical issue. I'm sorry if this is not the right forum for this question! But does anyone have any suggestions? Everywhere I look has pre-planned itineraries and we'd like to book at our own pace. Thank you in advance.

We've done big trips in the USA with lots of planning, but I always go to an area where I have a friend that lives there or where Mayo Clinic is close by. Mayo's travel service apparently only works on immunizations, which is not our need.

Thanks again!

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/travel-abroad-with-medicine. I do not know of a specific travel agency that will help you with this. You will have to do your own research through government sites. It all depends on the type of medication you are all on. Not all ADHD meds are considered controlled substances in Europe.

You can quite easily plan a trip to Europe. Depending on what time you have, I would consider cutting a few countries out. Switching destinations always takes a day out of the itinerary. Perhaps keep to Southern Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Easily done by train.

As for any health problems that may come up, you are at the mercy of the medical care in each country. For this reason, you should have travel health insurance. Any pre-existing condition is not covered unless you purchase within 15 days of your first deposit (such as when you book airline tickets or book your first hotel). It should not be too costly for two 14-year-old boys. Try a company such as Travel Guard, Travelex, or Travel Insured Internation to name just a few. There are many travel insurance companies out there.

I suggest that you talk to your doctor(s) and figure out what is the worse that can happen and get advice on how you should deal with each medical condition should it arise. Ask the doctor(s) to provide you with updated prescriptions for each of your medications in case you run out or lose them.

I also suggest that you prepare an itinerary with hotel locations. Google and prepare a list of the nearest hospital, pharmacy and clinic. If you have a special condition, for example, heart problem, you should find out which hospital has the best cardiac unit. You can also post here or on tripadvisor once you have decided where you plan to stay and people who have stayed or even lived in the area may be able to give you suggestions for a nearby doctor or pharmacist who speaks English.

You should be able to carry your medication along with the prescription to prove your needs. You should have no problems unless you bring a suspiciously excessive amount of medication. You could provide a detailed list of your "controlled" meds here or on tripadvisor, and people who have traveled with the same meds (e.g. medical marijuana) can give you their personal experience.

You should also look into what medical coverage you need or qualify for. You can try online, travel agent, insurance agent or even auto association.

Caroline: My wife has been under pain management for the last 23 years, and we travel without incident with her three controlled medications. Not once have we ever been questioned about that big plastic bag of her medications. The only issue is that we have to project out travel dates for whenever she's not going to her monthly doctor's office visit.

We have been to Berlin/Dresden and London and Athens and on an Adriatic cruise ending in Italy in the last year. We also hit Las Vegas and 3 Utah national parks in between with the grandkids.

We have learned to adapt to the situation. The best thing we ever did was get a Luggie folding personal scooter that takes my wife through any airport and right to the door of the airplane. They gate check the scooter and it meets us as we leave the plane. We require no assistance from anybody, and I also carry on all our luggage on the plane.

How well do your 12 & 14 year old sons act in public? We also have an unmedicated ADHD daughter that's a holy terror as an adult. Unless they're willing to conform and be mannerly, they can stay elsewhere while you're on a European trip. We have no desire to go on vacation and be miserable. We're raising our 11 year old granddaughter, and she's been to Europe twice with us. Good luck to you.

I have inflammatory arthritis and have traveled for seven weeks in Scandinavia in 2022 and am now on a nine week trip in Spain. I have a biologic injection that needs to be kept cold and that travels with me in a medication cooler. I carry my medication in its original packaging, carry original prescriptions and have a letter from my rheumatologist about needing to keep the medication cold. It gets scanned separately at airports and I always tell them it's medication.

My medication has been checked at airports in Norway (Trondheim and Oslo - a quick look at the prescriptions) and at Heathrow in London - we were taken aside, a supervisor called and lots of questions about my cooler which is a metal thermos with a USB powered motor. My pain specialist told me I wouldn't be able to travel with medical marijuana but I have had no problems carrying Tramadol, endone and codeine.

Can't help on the ADHD medication.
