Best time to visit Swiss and Austria?

Hello, friends!

I’m taking my elderly parents to Europe for three weeks this summer!
We’re visiting parts of Switzerland, France, and Austria. I wouldn't say I am very familiar with Swiss and France, and I am really just starting to work on this itinerary. We’re planning to leave in the last week of May (around May 24th), but I’m unsure if Switzerland and Austria will be too cold at that time. Would it be better to go in mid-June instead?

Thank you!

Not that it is cold, it might actually be hot. But the high hiking trails in the Alps will probably not be open yet. All the snow may not be melted and trails have to be rehabilitated. It will still be preseason so to speak. So unless your plan is hiking in the high Alpine landscape, it should be fine to visit.

Thanks for your response, Sam!

We’re not planning on doing any difficult hikes, but we’re definitely interested in the picturesque, lush green landscapes, especially in Grindelwald and Zermatt. We're just unsure what to expect in late May or early June, since, at least here in the U.S., winter doesn’t immediately transition into green fields.

At the end of May, in the northern plateau and the Alpine region of Switzerland, it is likely that the temperature will be normal in the noon and afternoon, and a little colder at night and in the morning. The lowest temperature may be around 10°C but not lower, unless you are going to the high mountain areas. The southern part of Switzerland is relatively warmer. Whether it is at the end of May or in June, there may be showers. The situation in Austria is similar to that in Switzerland, but the temperature is slightly higher and there is more rainfall.
