Best Over-Night High Speed Trains: I want to wake up far away

I hope to take advantage of a Global Eurail Pass and want to exprience first-class sleeping sleeping compartments on some of the best overnight train lines.
Are there some famous "night trains"between major cities?

I'm pretty sure there is one between Paris and Venice. I've never taken it, but it could be fun.

Hi Tom,

I do not know of any high-speed night trains. The purpose of the night train is usually to take a route more slowly so that it gives you proper time to sleep.

That being said, Paris-Venice is a popular one at around thirteen hours. Paris-Rome is about fifteen hours.

City Night Line's private sleepers are probably the most luxurious accommodations. The first class sleeper has built-in private bathroom/shower and table/chairs. The beds are positioned so you can view the scenery while laying down. Off-hand I think their longest route is Amsterdam to Milan. You can view their route map and schedules here:

Sleep quality aside (there are very differing preferences on this forum on this topic)...I've taken the CityNightLine overnight Prague to Basel Switzerland (and am taking again this coming May). We had a double deluxe cabin - there are only a couple cabins on this particular train route.

It was a really nice cabin - shower, toilet, sink, towels and even toiletries. The conductor brought us drinks and checked on us - it was great. I think that route is almost 14 hours but very enjoyable. We had time to relax, sleep, get up, eat (they brought in breakfast) and shower.

I see that I will have to make a few key reservations if I hope to get a sleeper...some dates are filling up already.

I look forward to the Basel-Prague and the Copenhagen-Amsterdam trips. The extra fee in addition to Eurail is much less expensive than an additional night lodging in Copenhagen and you dont lose a sightseeing day to travel.

I love night trains!

I love night trains as well - we took a night train from Amsterdam to Munich. It was my husband, teen daughter, and me and the cabin was great - much like a cheap cruise cabin. We had enough space for a good nights sleep including a bathroom/shower and the steward came in and remade the bunks into seating so he could serve our breakfast which was awesome!
