Best of Europe in 21 Days - 2026

Hello,

We live near Chicago. My boss (wife) and I are looking into booking the 21-day Best of Europe tour. We have never booked with Rick Steves' Europe - actually we have never booked any guided tour. Most of our travel in Europe and Asia, we did them ourselves or taking cruises. If you have taken this tour, please help us out by providing guidance, tips, and such. 21-day trip seems to be a long time.

The boss is very concerned about the hotels we would stay in. She wants to check out each hotel, however, there is no such list available on the website. Do we have to share bathroom with others? We have the "bad" habit of taking a shower every morning!

Any tidbits that would help us to prepare for the trip would be much appreciated.

With respect and thank you!

Ann & Michael

Shared bathrooms are rare on Rick Steves tours, and always mentioned in the PHYSICAL DEMANDS section of the tour page.

This was our first RS Tour as well. We have done a mix of independent travel with a tour every now and then. This trip was great, as an independent traveler it would be very hard to duplicate this trip on your own IMO. We went on this tour in May of 2022. The first tip I would share is to go early or late in the year, the summer is Italy can be no fun, and RS warns about air conditioning at some hotels. The second tip would be to contact RS Tours and ask about laundry opportunities. Ours were in Reuttle and Monterosso. The only downside of this tour was the length, by the end I was tired of living on someone else's schedule. In the end there were many more positives than negatives. So to sum up, book it and have a great trip.

Our hotel list from 2022:

Ambassador City Centre Hotel Haarlem
Hotel Restaurant Altkölnischer Hof Bacharach
Hotel Altes Brauhaus Rothenburg
Alpenhotel Ernberg Reutte Austria (The tour does not stop here now)
Hotel Serenissima Venice
Palazzo dal Borgo Florence
Hotel Museum Rome
Hotel Punta Mesco Monterosso al Mare
Hotel Alpenruh Mürren
Les Remparts Hotels & Demeures Historiques Beaune France
Hôtel Beaugency Paris

P.S. We had no shared baths, and showered each morning.

Ann and Michael,
We have done mostly independent travel, but have taken a few tours with various well-known tour companies. Believe me, a private bath has always been included. And I don't understand the thinking that a daily shower is a "bad" habit. This concept of daily baths or showers being the exception to the rule sounds very odd to me. Have you or they traveled somewhere where daily bathing is the exception? Group tours are not filled with people who don't practice good personal hygiene IMO. Even when we toured China, the hotels were top-notch. Have they or you had some bad experiences in your travels or tours?

As to tour length, our longest tour has been two weeks, and it was not too long because there were so many interesting things to see and do. I don't know about 3 weeks. We have traveled in Europe for four months, having ordered a car there and moving around at our leisure. There were times when we had to go our own ways for an afternoon. (Four months constantly in each other's company is quite the test of comparability!)

Hotels can be listed for a tour, but sometimes they may have to be changed. Our experience has been that the quality is the same in the new hotel, when a change has occurred. I hope the boss will be happy with her tour. RS tours are, as far as I know, not deluxe tours. I would make sure she reads the info about the tour (taking charge of your own bag, maybe not having an elevator, etc.) so her expectations mesh with the tour realities. If she is expecting more deluxe service/locales, she may prefer something like Odyssey tours, or others.

Best of luck!

Oops! compatibility, not comparability!

You don’t normally get a list of all the hotels on your tour til approximately 30 days before, first and last after you sign up. And the tours don’t always stay at the same hotels. After 12 tours, the hotels have been mostly small family run, pretty much consistently clean, some much nicer than others. As suggested, check out the scrapbooks for an idea of what to expect. If your wife wants the five star variety, you might look at something like Tauck but you do pay more. We have not done that specific tour but on all the others, we have never shared a bathroom.

This tour used to be one of the ones where a shared bath was a possibility. This was when the Switzerland stop was in Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The possibility of a shared bath is no longer listed.

To see if a shared bath is a possibility go to the specific tour page.

https://www.ricksteves.com/tours

Scroll down to Physical Demands and open that section. Here’s what it says for the 21 Day tour:

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Europe in 21 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…
- Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
- Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
- After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

To see a tour that currently has shared bathrooms, go to the Best of Scandinavia tour and look at Physical Demands where you will see the shared bath thing.

This is a wonderful tour! I do recommend arriving at least one day early to the Netherlands and staying as many days as you can in Paris at the end. It did not seem like a long time to me, lol. You are seeing blockbuster sights every day!

I recommend a waterproof rain jacket with a hood and shoes that you can walk 5-7 miles in. Our longest walking days were 10 miles in both Amsterdam and Rome. This was before smart watches so was measured on a pedometer which were not as accurate. The better your fitness level the more fun you will have!

Go!

21-day trip seems to be a long time.

Did the 17 day Best of Italy tour and it was amazing how quickly the Farewell dinner came.

Don't worry, the time will pass quickly. You won't be asking "is it over yet?"; it will be "is it over already?"

I wonder if this tour is going to be the best choice for your wife. Nothing wrong with wanting more information about the hotels in advance, but as others have said, that info will come later. Will your wife want more information in advance on group meals, specific sights you'll visit, etc too? Not a criticism of her - we are all different - but a tour, especially of this length, requires a lot of flexibility and going with the flow (read the No Grumps policy to see what's required of you as a tour member.)

It may well be that she'll be happier with more control, either with a more upscale company like Taulk or Trafalgar, or simply going on your own, maybe using the RS books as a template.

I recommend the video,Is a Rick Steves' Tour Right for Me?

I found the description of the tour activity level and physical demands accurate. You will walk the distances described by the itinerary. Believe the packing lightly mantra! You will lug your own luggage to the hotel, only twice did the bus park at the hotel and a majority of our hotels did not have elevators. There were no shared showers.
