Best of Eastern Europe - Pre and Post Tour Possibilities

My wife and I are considering the Best of Eastern Europe tour. We would likely fly into Prague a couple days early - partly to recover from jet lag which I experienced on our only other trip to Europe (21 day BOE). If we wanted to take a day trip or two from Prague, where would you recommend going?

If we wanted to extend our trip after finishing in Ljubljana, where would you recommend going for 3-4 days? Looking at Google Maps, we could venture toward Venice (not sure what towns we'd want to visit or how we'd get there) and fly home from Venice. We could travel toward Vienna and fly home from Vienna. Could we visit Salzburg (I'm a Sound of Music fan ever since my Grandmother took me to see the movie in San Diego in the 60s at the Point Loma Movie Theatre) and Vienna in 3-4 days? We could stay a few extra days in Ljubljana although I'm not sure what there is to do there.

My wife and I love walking around cities, going on guide-led walking tours and visiting museums.

Thank you for any tips you can share.

You could easily have Salzburg as a stop between Ljubljana and Vienna. Ljubljana has a direct train connection to Salzburg. (This train also stops in Jesenice, which is a short taxi ride from Lake Bled.) It takes some 4,5 hours with amazing mountain scenery on the way. Salzburg has a half-hourly train to Vienna, taking 2,5 hrs.
Ceske Krumlov and Kutna Hora are popular day trips from Prague. If you want something less touristy, I can recommend Tabór and Hradec Kralové. Both have regular direct train connections from Prague, taking some 1,5 hrs.
The website of the German railways has a pan-European train planner for looking up connections. (Tickets must be bought with the national railway companies though.)

I did this tour in 2012. Pre tour I added 1.5 days in Prague, on one I did a half day trip to Kutna Hora to see the bone church and a walk around the lovely town. I took an organized tour but it is easy on your own. Post tour I took a morning train from Lesce Bled to Salzburg, stayed overnight, and then took the train to Munich and flew home from there. I wasn't able to do the Sound of Music tour based on my schedule, so if you have the time I'd make sure you stay two nights in Salzburg so you can work in a sing along. ;)

I have nothing to add but just wanted to wave hello to fellow 21 day tour-mates Mark and Kathy! I am sure you will love this tour - I've heard only good things about it from many people. Do plan enough time ahead to go to Cesky Krumlov as mentioned above. Again, I've not been there but understand it is amazing.

Have a wonderful time!

I didn't realise the Ljbuljana to Salzburg train also had a stop in Lesce-Bled.

1) Vilnius and its area (Lithuania)
2) Prešov, Bardejov and Levoča (Slovakia)
3) Lublin and Puławy (Poland)
