My husband and I like to watch The Teaching Company DVDs that relate to places we are traveling to plus other mind improving DVDs like "House" on 12 and 14 hour flights. Any recommendations for simple lightweight DVD players with good battery life (I'm not kidding on the 12 and 14 hour flight thing). Yes, I am a techno clueless person born well, I remember when the Bettle's were on the Ed Sullivan Show. Please, be kind.

From your post I gather you want a portable DVD player as opposed to watching all of what you describe say on an iPod Touch. If you are okay with having to lug it around the SONY DVP FX820 is a good buy because of the 8 inch screen and battery life.
I took my iPod touch with me on my last flight from LAX to London. Listened to an audiobook I had downloaded along with RS audio guides for Venice and Florence, which were my final destinations. I had downloaded a film but my British Airways flight had 5 first run features to chose from so no need to watch anything on the iPod Touch. What airlines are you traveling on? Most will have many films and tv shows to watch while in flight and you'll each have your own screen to watch your choice on.

I second the reco for SONY DVP FX820 (as my 2yo watches it). We did a lot of research for a portable DVD player for our daughter. We love this one. We use a DVD Player Case by Case Logic.
