What is my best bet for getting around Amalfi Coast, while staying in Sorrento? I've different input - bus, taxi, etc.?? I'd like to travel Positano, Capri and Ravello.
Grazie!
I went to the Amalfi Coast last year (skipped it this year) when I was in Italy. I rented a car in Salerno and then drove to Amalfi where we were staying. I live in Dallas where people drive like maniacs anyway, so I was well prepared. They gave us a brand new, never been driven, Mercedes C-Class. Needless to say I was very nervous. The Amalfi Coast road is EXTREMELY narrow. We had to back downhill, fold in the mirrors, and get right up against the rock face to let a tour bus pass. It literally squeaked past us with only an inch to spare. I really don't recommend this mode of transportation, and I was warned ahead of time. You will have a very difficult time finding parking anywhere you go and even with a navigation system it will be difficult to get around. You won't be able to look at the scenery because your eyes will be glued to the road and your passengers will be white knuckled. If I were to do it all over again, I would use the ferry to go from town to town. Since Ravello is not on the water, you will go to Amalfi and then take a bus from there. There is a tobacco shop that sells tickets along the waterfront. Beware that your ticket has not already been validated. I got on a bus with a group of Brits who had been sold previously validated tickets and the "inspector" just happened to be on board the bus and tried to fine them 37 Euro each. There were six of them. It was a scam! They refused to pay and were threatened with the police, but eventually backed down the inspector when they dared him to call the police.
I don't know about the bus service between towns, but I can imagine that with the stops along the way and the need to possibly change buses, it's probably not a very efficient way to travel long distance. You may want to hire a driver for a day, but that can be quite pricey, as well as the taxis (another rip-off).
Again, I think the ferry is the way to go! The scenery is great!
Another vote for the ferries....fun, relaxing and you actually see the beautiful scenery that makes that coastline so famous. The Tourist Info office in Sorrento provided schedules.
I highly recommend the bus trip from Positano to Amalfi. The scenery/view from the bus is beautiful. Be sure to get a seat on the right hand side of the bus going to Positano. The boat ride from Positano to Amalfi was wonderful. When you get to Amalfi take the bus to Ravello. Please do not miss Ravello as it is absolutely gorgeous from the two villas - Rufolo and Cimbrone.
I just posted an answer to a similar question in the "to the Boot" section. Check it out under "a driver named Salvatore" posted by "jane". Send me a PM if you have any other questions. Have a wonderful trip!
Thanks to all the incredible people who responded to me on my Amalfi Coast question. This traveler's helpline is a phenomenal resource which I will continue to use.
I appreciate my fellow travelers of this world and I am grateful for their well wishes.
