Best European destination in mid-late June

My 23 yr old daughter and I are coming to Europe mid June. What is the best destination for smaller crowds and not so expensive. We like some hiking or easy biking and my daughter is a " foodie"
Thanks!

Your previous posts indicate you were in England in late April of this year. Are you heading back from Colorado to Europe on an entirely new trip 6 weeks later?

It's hard to offer any feedback to this general question. The sum total of your previous posts indicate you've covered a lot of interesting-sounding places already....what did you already have in mind for this trip...it's starting in 2 weeks so you likely have some parameters filled out...like your arrival and departure cities??

In terms of expense ...
Avoid: UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland.
Consider: Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland.
Travelling in France, Spain, Italy and Germany can be budget minded if you avoid their expensive big cities.

Accommodation in Berlin can be surprisingly economical for a major city. I stayed at a four-star hotel last year for well under $100 US. Only drawback was no air conditioning, probably not a big issue before July (depending on this year's weather.) Its tourist attractions draw tourists but there's lots to see and do, and lots of green space.

Berlin also has a wide variety of decent foreign restaurants, though I can't guarantee that they will excite a foodie. Cities in eastern Germany (former DDR) other than Berlin were quite light on American tourists last July and theoretically could be less hot than more southerly destinations. But these are definitely not foodie hotspots: Quedlinburg, Erfurt, Gorlitz, Dresden, Schwerin. Dresden has fab museums; the others have beautiful architecture that survived the war.

Sicily will be hot in mid-June (not good hiking weather), but tends not to be overrun by foreign tourists except for Taormina. Food's fabulous. I think it needs about 2 weeks, if not longer, though.

Hi,

If you want traditional German food, go to eastern Germany, especially for dishes whose origins are in Brandenburg, or even in the former Prussian East. I'll be in Berlin in mid-June, compared to other capitals I pay a lot less for a room at a Pension or small hotel. Towns in the east are the places you just might find yourself as the only American seeing the sights...Weimar, Meissen, Halle an der Salle, Magdeburg, Neuruppin, Jena.
