My fiance and I have 12 days to visit Europe in January. We can't decide where to go. We've been to London, Paris, Geneva, Rome, Florence, Athens-- all in March and May. I hear that many attractions are closed in Winter and we don't ski.
We don't need to see a lot of places, but does anyone know of a romantic destination for Winter, city and/or mountains, that is still happening in January?
Thanks.
Look up information about Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. It happens at New Years, so maybe it won't fit in, but I've been told it is great.
Our rule of thumb is that cities are best visited in the cooler months. Coast, mountains (unless you ski) and countryside are for other times. If the weather is less than good there are plenty of things to do indoors.
Any of the major cities and towns are ok to visit in the winter. They are not like resorts that slow/shut down in the winter, life goes on for the local inhabitants. Overseas visitor numbers are generally lower so it can be more comfortable to visit the sights.
Most attractions remain open throughout the year, but they may reduce operating hours in the winter. Major cities are probably your best bet in January. Most mountain resorts are also hopping with activity, but if you were there, you'd pay a lot of money to watch other people ski.
