Best European city to land in to go to Italy

We are planning to spend 2 weeks in Italy on the way to India from US. Can someone tell me which city would be best to land in so we get the best round trip airline rates to Italy - our options are London, Brussels and Frankfurt.

In Italy, we will mostly be visiting Venice, Rome, Milan, Florence... What is the best mode of transport within Italy?

Thanks in advance!!

I guess I am wondering why you would not just fly directly into Milan or Rome? You would probably fly through London, Brussels or Frankfurt, but usually the cost difference to fly into Rome on a ticket is only slightly more than stopping at London.

If it is business thing, and they are allowing a two week "layover", then I guess I understand, in that case probably London would be best due to the large number of Ryanair, BMI, and Easyjet flights from that city; but it may also mean overnighting in London since most of those carriers are located at other airports and since they do not codeshare, if you miss your flight, you are out of luck.

Price it out.....I'm guessing your flight choices to India mean stopping over in either London, Brussels or Frankfurt.

If that's the case, check all three cities. (But I'd guess your best choices would be London or Frankfurt.) My suggestion would be to fly open jaw...into one city and out another. Considering the four cities you want, I'd fly into Milan and out of Rome, or vice versa. These two cities would have the most number of flights and perhaps more competition keeping the prices down.

Your itinerary would then be: Milan-Venice-Florence-Rome or Rome-Florence-Venice -Milan. Keep going in one direction. Don't double back as it wastes time and money.

The Italian trains are great - the "only" way to go within Italy. They are generally reliable and very "user-friendly."

It is pretty easy to find reasonably priced non-stop flights from London to many of the airports in Italy; however keep in mind that the flight to Italy may depart from a different airport than the one at which you arrive from the States. To be safe, I'd plan to spend the night in London the day you arrive as well as the day you leave.

When checking for flights, use the code "LON" so that you get all of the London airports.

I've flown between London and Italy three times in the last four years. All of my flights have been on BA. When comparing BA with the discount airlines, make sure to price out cost of getting to and from airport, additional fees, etc.
