Best European City For Christmas

Hello All!

My husband and I are relatively new travellers looking to spend Christmas in Europe this year. We spent our honeymoon in Paris and I have done a tour of Italy several years ago but we are looking for somewhere new to explore. Because our exact date of arrival will be very last minute, we need a city that is easy to get to, pedestrian friendly, and not to overcrowded (since we will not be able to make lodging reservations till the day before).

My question is what cities would you all recommend for a Christmas holiday?

Thank you in advance!

You've toured Italy before, so if you want something completely different, this might not help, as I've only been in Europe on Dec 25 in Sicily, but . . . although it can be rainy in Spain and Italy in December, it's not sweltering like it can be in summertime. It might be worth considering Southern Europe at Christmastime, if only because seeing it at other times of the year can be so hot. We were in Rome the week before Christmas, and while there were visitors at sights, we never were elbow-to-elbow, and didn't have to stand in lines. We'd arranged a Rome apartment for a week well before we left the USA, so can't say for sure what your experience would be getting a room. The city had a great holiday air, with a lit Christmas tree outside the Colosseum, presepi around nearly every corner, and just about everyone toting a panettone home in a yellow box by the ribbon handle on top. Central Rome was very pedestrian friendly, except for sidewalks where people had walked their dogs but hadn't cleaned up after them :-P , and sometimes we seemed to be the only non-smokers out walking.

If you went to Spain, how about Madrid or Barcelona? Bilbao (Guggenheim Art Museum and tapas in the Casco Viejo) in the north? Seville or Granada in the south?

Are you also flying last-minute, as that could really affect your airfares?

Strasbourg, France - 2.5 hours by train from Paris. Or, check out Christmas Markets on-line in Germany for some options.

Check out what's as available for hotels in different cities on booking. com or another booking source -- when I looked at Salzburg for Christmas (in March or April) there were a lot of hotels already full.

Not wanting to rain on your parade -- but the time before Christmas is a big holiday in Europe just like at home.

We spend about every other Christmas in Europe. A few notes: Christmas eve in the evening, Christmas Day and the day following can be pretty dead so you have to do some research. But we always find events, restaurants, etc with a little advance planning. Great time to have rented an apartment so you can personalize the holiday ... Buy a tree!

I know you said "no Italy" but we had a fabulous Christmas in Venice. No crowds, Christmas lights, hot mulled wine sold on the street ice skating in campo San Palo (sp).

We started in Munich, took train to Verona and then Venice and then on to Bologna and Milan.
