Best direction to go from Switzerland?

Hi all. I'm planning a trip to Europe in June, and I'm looking for suggestions on places to visit. I'll be starting in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, and I plan to have 8 or 9 days to travel by train to some nearby places. Either I'll make a loop and come back to Switzerland at the end, or maybe I'll make a one-way trip and book my flight home from a different country. Either way, I'll be heading primarily in one direction from Switzerland, so I guess my question is: what direction should i head? I was thinking about heading generally north to visit Paris, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Or I could head southeast, to Italy, Austria, and Budapest.

Any opinions? What are your favorite destinations in the countries near Switzerland? Cities and rural places are both great. I'd been a few places in near here (Bern, Swiss Alps, Munich, Nice, Florence, and Vienna), and I've loved all of those, but I want to see some new places. I recommend going Chamonix, France to enjoy the alpine town and to hike on the Aguille de Midi. Then, travel west a bit to Annecy, to enjoy a beautiful town on a lake, where you can have fondue, sail, and watch the kite surfers over the mountains in the distance.

Interlakken is one of our favorite places in Switzerland and it is centrally located.

There are many places to see close to Switzerland. With 8-9 days to see outside of Switzerland, you have many options. You could head to Venice then to Vienna and Budapest or do the Burgundy and Provence area of SE France down the Rhone River from Lyon to Arles, or head to Paris and perhaps Brugges, Belgium and Amsterdam.

You post an interesting question which is pretty broad. Anywhere is possible. I would head to Colmar, France for a couple of days and then spend your remaining time in Paris.

You will be very close to Annecy and Chamonix. Both wonderful places to visit

Not strictly in accordance with what you ask, but while you are in Switzerland I highly recommend the wonderful train trip from Brig to Locarno, via the Centovalli. It still remains the most charming train journey of my life!
