Best Direction from Paris to Milan

Hi
From Australia and first time to Europe, so just trying to understand all the options and hoping to get some advice.

We are booked on a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. Prior to leaving on this cruise we have a couple of weeks to travel around and are looking at Paris - Milan - Lake Como - Bernina Express to Chur - Glacier Express from Chur to Brig then to Zurich and and onto Amsterdam for a few days prior to the cruise

I was hoping to get some suggestions if this is a good route or if there is a better option or direction. Would it be better to go Paris to Switzerland and then Lake Como - Milan and then to Amsterdam

Appreciate any advice

Thanks

I am sure everyone will have their own advice- I’d personally go Milan then Switzerland then Paris, as Paris to Amsterdam is a fast easy train ride.

The main rail line between Paris and Milan is currently blocked by a landslide that happened in August, and it might not be rebuilt until September, so going through Switzerland is the way to go for now. How many stops are you looking at?

You get to Milan from Paris with a 2 hour train change in Basel. Or you could get to Como City from Zurich and take a lake boat to a location like Varenna where you can get a train to Tirano where you can catch the Bernina Express.

Going from Chur to Zurich, instead of the Glacier Express, I'd take regional trains that run on the same tracks to Andermatt, then a short train to Goeschinen, then a train to Zurich. Think about stopping in Luzern for a few days.

Start by getting an open jaw ticket, Australia to Milan, and back from Budapest.

Then you can do Milan - Varenna - st. Moritz - Zermatt - Lausanne - Paris - Amsterdam. Gives you the Italian lakes, Bernina Express and Glacier Express, Swiss mountains, and then an easy ride to Paris.

My best direction from Paris to Milan would be on EasyJet.com. Quick, easy, cheap. Those Alps make train travel difficult from Paris to Italy.

Lugano, Switzerland is just a 45 minute bus ride to the train station. You can catch the trains into the central part of Switzerland from there. And Lake Como's just to the east.
