My husband and I (active 30s, like a face paced trip but with time to exhale along the way) are looking to head to Europe in mid-April for 10 days. We don't care if it's a little chilly/shoulder season[INVALID] where would you suggest? We've already been to: England, Ireland, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria...open to anywhere else!
Have you considered Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey? In my opinion, April would be a great time to visit there, before it gets too hot. Something to keep in mind: Easter Sunday is on April 25 next year, so you're looking at a long holiday weekend for many Europeans, beginning with Good Friday and ending with Easter Monday. You can count on lots of tourist buses rolling into destination cities. A friend described Easter Week in Sevilla - the Good Friday processions were incredibly moving and very picturesque.
Sounds like a great time for Italy or Spain. I'm going to Italy late April-May 2011.
Correction to my previous post: Easter Sunday is on April 24 NOT 25 next year....sorry...
Portugal. Italy. Greece. But much rain at Italy in April. If you go to islands of Greece (Kykladik islands or Crete), I recommend : be there before Easter weekend, because public transportation there can be a problem - thousands of Greek people travelling at and near Easter sunday.
from Zurich airport we have traveled thru Switzerland (east)(St Moritz, stay in Pontresina) taking the Bernina express train to Italy during April. It is right after ski season and all was quiet and beautiful, some traces of snow. Also The dolomites ending in Venice is another terrific option.
I would go to Amsterdam, then to Lisse to the bulb fields, and to Brugge, Belgium.
Thanks for all of the advice! We're thinking about trying to head to Greece (as long as we can time it to not be there during Easter, as I hear the prices get very high during that weekend). Croatia, Turkey and Italy are on the short list following Greece. Wish we could take a month vacation!
