We are planning to travel to Europe this spring, and we would like your advice on what is the best time to travel, best day (we heard Tuesday) and where do we find the cheapest airfare? We don’t really care if we land in London or Amsterdam or Paris or Nice, we just looking for the best Airfare deal and then we will get a Europass and take trains from there. Thoughts?
Now is the time to be looking to buy your tix for Spring because there are some bargain fares available now that won’t be around for long. I’ve seen roundtrip fares for direct flights into April from LA to Copenhagen, Barcelona and Paris for less than $500.
Generally, March is less expensive than April and April is less expensive than May. By the end of May, fares spike upward.
You can go to www.Skyscanner.com and click “whole month” to see which days the least expensive fares are available. Keep in mind, some of these have two stops en route and may not be worth the time required. Generally, the least expensive days are Tuesday and Wednesday but that is not always the case. Go to www.Google.com and type in “flights” and it will show you what’s available for the routes you’re considering. You can also sign up for fare alerts and they will e-mail you when there is a fare reduction for a route you’re interested in.

There's been extended discussion here, and most of those of those "theories" for cheap air fare have been disproven. The current sophisticated air fare price-setting algorithms are hard to dissect. Just do your research on Google Flights and set up price alerts, on multiple dates and cities.
Europasses are not such a deal anymore, better to buy train tickets directly from the companies in each respective country, and download the specific apps to purchase tickets.
For this spring, have you checked available lodging? Many travelers book 8-9 months out, so reasonable priced lodging may be in short supply. Perhaps lodging availability will influence your itinerary.
Have a great trip, wherever you end up!
Hi Pat, Did you survive our rains this week? Up here in Carlsbad it wasn’t as torrential as it was down in SD.
Cheers!
Follow Pat’s advice. Google flights. Google flight alerts. Book thru specific airline. There’s no rhyme or reason to getting the best low fares anymore. Flights to Europe are expensive this year. You are going to need to do your homework.
Yup, follow @Margie's advice to follow @Pat's advice.
Check lodging prices before committing to airfare to avoid having your airfare savings wiped out by high hotel demand/prices. In addition to regular festivals and events that you may know of, something you didn’t know about like a big soccer match, a Taylor Swift concert or the Global Aluminum Convention could seriously affect hotel prices in an area for days or weeks (Paris Olympics, I’m looking at you!). You don’t need to book your hotel right away, just check the prices.
I’d say that the routes I’m interested in from Seattle to Europe, most of the time, weekdays (M/T/W/Th) are cheaper than weekends (F/Sa/Su). But, just when I think I have that figured out, I find a good deal on a Saturday. Set up alerts. Look at all the days. Check all of the airlines. Since you are so flexible, you have a good chance of finding a deal, but I think this will take some research.
And, yes, the cost of a Eurail pass rarely beats point to point tickets.
@Kenko, we had two roof leaks, but it was raining with the force of bullets here. ( I'm a bit north of Ranch Bernardo area.) And two out of three dogs were crossing their legs all day! Thx for asking!
We have a friend in San Diego that had painters (interior) in while that storm came though. they were kind enough to cover some furniture. It could have been much worse for her
Also while looking at Google flights look at the Date Grid. One axis is departures & the other axis is Arrivals. It has 7 days on each axis so 49 possibilities. Very helpful if you have flexibility
