Best?

Where is the BEST place to go in Europe?

What is the BEST way to get there?

Where is the BEST place to stay?

You can define BEST. I want you to read my mind.

You just want to start a fight.

Let's make this quick.

Best place to go ... place where you return alive.
Best way to get there ... the one that gets you there alive.
Best place to stay .... the one where you wake up

Shouldn't change for anybody except those holding a glass that is half empty.

What's best for me will not be the best for you. Everyone's got different interests and reacts differently in situations.
The best transportation is not necessarily by price. Time duration is a big consideration.
And everyone has a different opinion of accommodations.

Y’all missing the point. This same thing goes on in a neighborhood Facebook group that on a few occasions has something of import for us. People must only get the BEST whatever, not just any reasonable option.

The BEST is to not worry or gripe about other people, live your own life, and ignore vague questions if they irritate you.

Best place to go...where the air is breathable.

Best way to get there...where the mode of transportation is at least efficient.

Best place to stay...where the stay is uninhibited by potential distractions.

I continue to return there year after year...except of course in 2021.

My itinerary for 2022 is full of adventures.

Naturally...where ever the heart longs to be is always best!

I fail to see the issue with people asking questions like that. It is common, just look at the plethora of "Best of" articles out there; and I often use the term when searching for something in Google.

Why? Well, if I am looking for a restaurant, just searching "restaurants" does not narrow it down. Searching for "highest rated" only fills the search with TA, Yelp, and other garbage reviews. Other terms bring up the most popular, most touristed, or most expensive options.

But best will drag up some blogs, articles and other sources that explain "why" the restaurants (in this example) are the "best", leaving me to make my own decision if that is a qualifier for "best".

So rather than chiding the OP for the question, I give an answer, usually several options, explaining what makes them best.

So with restaurants, maybe one with good regional food at a low cost, another more elegant option, maybe something that has been the subject of the foodie world (Stanley Tucci went here!), or something with a view.

Now does any that meet the OPs definition of best? Don't care, they asked, I get to define best.

I dislike "best" questions too. I think it is a lazy way of communicating, because it puts the burden on the respondents to guess what your criteria are. It would be more appropriate to just ask for recommendations, or even "what is a good _______" rather than best.

Good one, Frank.

I hate those "best of" polls, because they are usually filled with inaccurate information. Everyone evaluates the "best of" something based on differing criteria. Maybe the best beach for one person is the place that has soft white sand, whereas another person wants a beach that offers easy snorkeling, and another person wants beach chairs and someone bringing drinks. Who gets to decide what is best for anyone else?

Every forum that I'm on has at least a post a day asking "where is the best place to stay in xxxx town" with no further information. Are they looking for the hotel with large rooms, proximity to sights, good service, or ????? And, at least provide some kind of price range!

Sometimes it is fun to give an outrageous answer. I think the best place to stay in Paris is the Ritz. It's only $2,000 a night, but it sure is nice!

I think people who generally ask for the “best” are just too lazy or inexperienced to do their own research…or maybe overwhelmed. However, if some one asks “which of these places…listing restaurants, museum, neighborhoods, whatever…is best, then I think it is a fair question and clearly it is the responders opinion.

I believe all 3 are answered, in adequate detail, on page 127 of the Rick Steves guidebook.

@Paul, you're a doll.

@stan Not everyone unable to communicate in an extremely descriptive or specific way is lazy.

@Frank I can still chuckle. ;)

The "best" list which drives me crazy is an annual "Best Doctors" listing published in a local magazine. Says who?

I believe in my local, Philadelphia Magazine, to get listed in the Top Docs, or Top Lawyers, or whatever (they have several of these), an exchange of money is required.

Haha, Laurel. Yes, I grind my teeth when someone asks for the "must-sees" and "must-dos". I always ask them to start out by giving us their interests, and then ask how much research they've done.

Paris

Premium economy or better

VRBO in Le Marais. I got a place for just over $100/night a few years ago.

Shoulder seasons or at least not June-August, when it can be hot as heck, often with no A/C, and a crush of tourists. That's not fun.
