My husband and I have 15 days including travel time from the US to travel to Europe. I have never been there, but my husband backpacked with friends for 6 weeks and covered quite a bit of territory after college. We bought our tickets to fly in and out of Heathrow, but can not decide on what cities to visit. We have narrowed it down to London, Paris, Venice, Florence, day trip to Siena/Tuscany and Rome. Should we cut out a city or 2 to enjoy our time without having to rush and how many days should we stay in each city.
Just look at a map, you are covering way to much territory. All you are going to see in the inside of train stations, trains, and airlines. You might have considered into Heathrow and home from Rome but if locked into those tickets it is half day travel by air just to get back to London. Make a loop out of London with a couple of day trips, to Paris and day trips, to Amsterdam and back to London.
I suggest that you back up a step and think about why you are going and what your interests are (history, architecture, art, food, scenery, etc) then plan you trip to maximize your exposure to these. Relying on someone whose interests are different from yours can result in a disappointing trip.
What are your interests? What is your budget? How young (at heart and heel) are you? These all factor into appropriate travel recommendations.
For example, you ask the "best" way from London to Paris. "Best" might mean cheap or scenic or fast depending on your goals.
I sense your plan is to "see" as much variety as possible at the expense of "experiencing" much at all. Nothing wrong with that but if I'm wrong- so, will be, my advice.
The more we understand your goals, the more we can help.
Are you going just to "cover territory" or do you have specific interests?? YOu are young, you will likely make it back to Europe in your lifetime,, try reducing your stops to fewer places,, but longer visits in each place. Don't tell me someones "done" Paris in a 2 or 3 day visit, they haven't. This goes for many sites
I would hit London, take Eurostar to Paris, , fly to Rome, and train to EITHER Venice or Florence. Fly back to London. That would be pushing it hard to me, as I think places like Paris, London and Rome are easily worth at least 5 or 6 days each..
Remember travel days take time. .
Cheap flights can be found on RyanAir, EasyJet, Vueling, and several other budget airlines.
Book early. Same with Eurostar, book early, book second class, and play with times and dates, booking for travel on Tues- Thurs often cheaper then weekend travel.
Good luck.
just one small tip if you've not booked your flight yet--when looking for flights, look for flights for the day BEFORE you want to travel--even if that means rushing from work to the airport. a lot of discount flights are very late at night, and end up with you arriving at your first destination in the morning (on what would be day ONE of your trip)--this could buy you a whole 'extra' day--or at least not waste a day in traveling, which is especially important if you're going to be doing so much travel during the 15 days.
sounds like a great--if exhausting--trip. but then again, there IS a difference between a 'trip' and a 'vacation'. you will have one great trip! best of luck to you!
If you are flying in and out of Heathrow, why not focus on the UK? You could see London (5+ days) with some day trips (Windsor, Bath, Cardiff, Stratford-upon-Avon, Canterbury, Dover); take the train to York (2 days) train to Edinburgh (2 days) train to Inverness (2 days) then cheap flight back to Heathrow (or take the train). You could even add Paris. If that doesn't interest you, focus on Italy. Take a cheap flight from London to Rome then do similar trip there.
London, Paris, take some time to see a little of France and then up to the Netherlands and back to the UK. Save Italy for next time. I love France and the Netherlands.
Thank you for all of the feedback. The reason we are flying into London is because it is the only non stop destination from Phoenix via British Air. Our focus was originally Italy and then we went overboard. So I think we will get a connecting flight into Paris- 5 days and then Florence 3 days and Rome - 5 days (plus 2 days travel time). Does that seem more reasonable? what is the best way to get from heathrow to paris...and then paris to florence?
Jennifer, it sounds like 13 days on the ground- certainly enough time to do a nice England, Ireland and Scotland loop, with a 2 day dash to Paris somewhere in there. Have a great trip!
