We haven't been, but this December we're going to Germany to see Christmas markets in Wurzburg, Rothenburg ob de Tauber, Nuremberg, Bamberg and Berlin.
We also plan to see other sites in those cities.

I will be going to Munich, Salzburg and Vienna for Christmas markets. It is my first time but forum posters say each of these cities has magical markets so I'm looking forward to seeing them.

To add to Franks reply. Where are you flying in and out of any how much time do you have? If we know these details we can help plan a more focused trip for you. BTW the other two responses list some great cities for Christmas markets, you can’t go wrong with any of them but they may not be best for your time allowance and airport(s).

I'm working on my 2020 trip, Amsterdam, Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Srasbourg, Colmar & Paris. May change out Amsterdam for Salzburg. Why Paris? Because it's Paris.

We have some time starting Dec. 13. Flying back from Israel but thought it would be good to stop by a Christmas market in Europe on the way back to the states. Maybe a city with an international airport to save on land travel but a couple hours train ride from an international airport is not a problem.

So, you are looking for a city with an airport with flights both to Israel and the USA. That makes it more difficult, plenty of locations with international airports which do not have flights to either.
The best markets are in medium sized cities, which generally have few or no intercontinental services from their airports.

Holly's suggestions: "Wurzburg, Rothenburg ob de Tauber, Nuremberg, Bamberg and Berlin.", of that, only Berlin has the flights, and would not be my first choice.
Judy: "Munich, Salzburg and Vienna", Salzburg has a very small airport.

How much time (nights) have you actually got? Can you fit in two?

My suggestion: Strasbourg, plus a few hours in Frankfurt, flying in and out of Frankfurt.
Lots of flights to/from Frankfurt, with good connections to Strasbourg (one of the best Christmas markets), and Frankfurt market as an appetiser.

Thank you everyone. It sounds like Frankfurt with train to Strasbourg is a good fit.

And if you have the time, Colmar is less than an hour from Strasbourg by train and also has amazing Christmas markets.

I haven't been to Strasbourg or Frankfurt markets.

I have been to the markets in and around Stuttgart and high recommend them.

Stuttgart -- large city market with booths that have decorated roofs.
Esslingen -- has a traditional Christmas market adjacent to a medieval market that is lit primarily by torches/fire and is truly magnificent
Ludwigsburg -- a Baroque market adjacent to a Baroque palace.

NOT Copenhagen!
Wonderful city, terrible markets, with tatty stuff from Asia, and very same-y at each stall.
Very disappointing!
I loved the city in winter though, and had a great time after my one highly-anticipated visit to the couple of markets there.

I just returned from markets in Switzerland, France, and Germany. Just trace my posting history for trip reports. Perhaps you will find one that fits your interests.
Safe travels!

We enjoyed the Christmas markets in Paris this year. We went to the ones at St Germaine des Pres, La Defense and Tuileries garden the first week in December. The streets throughout the city were decorated and Paris is just so lovely. It was cold (40-50’s in the daytime) but not terribly crowded. It was fun to see the big department stores all decorated (Galeries Lafayette, oh my!) and see the window displays.

We were in Madrid right before their Christmas market, and before they turned on their Christmas lights. But we saw them all set up and wished we could gave stayed one more day. That’s definitely a warmer option!
