I am deciding on my itinerary for this summer. I am traveling by car, from Berlin to Prague. Then, is it best to go to Munich and see the Romantic Road from there or travel West from Prague and south on the Romantic Road to Munich? Does anyone have an opinion?
Even if you found a car rental company who would allow it, I would not recommend taking a car into CZ. We purchased our train tickets on line in advance last year and it only cost 29 Euro each for the 5 hour trip from Berlin to Prague and then you can also buy cheap train tickets to Munich from Prague. At that point you can take a bus or rent a car if you prefer the freedom.
It is true there are only certain rental companies allow their cars in CZ. They also restrict the make/models of cars you're allowed to drive in CZ so coordinate ahead of time with the company. The theft rate was incredible and probably hasn't changed much.
All that said, we did drive a rental car (Renault combi from Sixt), but our B&B host locked it in her garage, then locked the gate, then parked her car in front of the gate. She then proceeded to provide us city maps and bus/tram tickets she kept for guests. That's gotta mean something... Anyway, we had no trouble navigating the public transportation. Good Luck!
