Berlin or Gothenburg, Sweden

Original plans were to go to Gothenburg after a cruise in Norway. We come back to Copenhagen. After talking with friends whose daughter lives in Berlin and looking at flights, we are re-thinking. We have 4 days and then we head to Stockholm to fly back to the States. We will be in Stockholm 3 days. Comments on if Berlin is a good idea Thanks so much.

Hi Marie -
If the flights from Copenhagen are doable, I would definitely choose Berlin over Gothenburg. Berlin has enough sites and activities, both within and very close by. to keep you occupied for months . I have spent perhaps 30 days in the city in the past 7 or 8 years and every time I go there I find new and interesting things to do. Do yourself a favor and check it out either online or in a good guide book.

Would you extend your stay in Stockholm to a week? Is there enough to do in Stockholm for 7 full days? Or split the week between Berlin and Stockholm? Thanks.

We did a 2 week house exchange in Berlin, and I left feeling that more time would have been even better. Three days in Stockholm were enough for me, on the other hand.

Try www.skyscanner.com for flights. Gothenburg is not much on the tourist radar, unless you've identified specific things of interest to you.

I liked Stockholm a lot, but it's a much smaller city than Berlin with a smaller roster of activities and sights. Berlin, on the other hand, is like New York or London - there's always more to see, and a tremendous variety as well.

Berlin is great with so much to see and do. I have not visited Gothenburg, so could not comment on that destination. Love Stockholm.

We came back into Copenhagen from our Baltic Cruise in May and then flew to Berlin where we spent 5 days. Berlin has so much to see and we really enjoyed our time there. We then flew back to Copenhagen for several nights, then home to the States.

Marie,
I loved Berlin - spent four days there last June and would love to go back, a fascinating city with much history, art and culture to recommend it. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

I just got back from my first trip to Berlin. Planned for 3 nights and ended up tacking on a 4th before heading south. I really enjoyed my time in taking a couple of tours around town and taking time to enjoy the park/music/people at James-Simon Park. It's perhaps the most bike-friendly city, especially large city, I've ever spent time in. I'll definitely be going back as there's so much to explore.

Berlin is a great idea, but think about your volume of luggage and bargain airline luggage charges, as well as whether you are ready to do your own tourism after ten days of having most decisions made for you. Berlin, in fact, is such a dense cultural location that it's an ideal place to still see a lot with insufficient advance planning!

I deliberately included Gothenburg on a trip to Scandinavia many years ago, and I'm still mystified by your OP. I had specific things I wanted to see, but it makes no sense. Did you select it purely geographically? What about St. Petersburg, Estonia, Finland, Hamburg, depending on the cheapest and best flights? Does your cruise include Oslo, Helsinki, or Norwegian fjords?

There are lots of good day trips from Copenhagen and Stockholm, if you decide you've exhausted the cities (which is hard to do.)

I loved Stockholm, but 7 days just in Stockholm, unless you want to relax, might be a bit much for most people, especially if you are used to the quick in and out of cruises. ( I was there four full days and loved it.) However, there are lovely day trips; i.e., Gota Canal, Eksjö, Granna, archipelago or take the Ferry to Tallin and/or Helsinki. I have not been to Berlin yet, but it is high on my list. The hassle of getting there (flying) and the amount to see would cause me leave it for a trip specifically to that area. I'm sure you could spend an entire week in Berlin easily, but I'd tell you not to short change Stockholm and Sweden as you are less likely to get up that way again.

Hi,

Going to Berlin is a good idea after the cruise. Gothenburg is a place I've never been to except passing through the train station once going north. If you have four full days for Berlin I suggest doing that trip. Two months ago I spent my 21st visit to that fascinating city, stayed 10 consecutive nights at the Pension, did a day trip to Rheinsberg and Neuruppin, only wish the weather had been a bit better on a couple of the days in Berlin.
