For Berlin, you might want to also look at "Insider Tours Berlin", "Brewers Tours", the "Fat Tire Bike" tours, or Jeremy Minsberg "The Berlin Expert". You can read their reviews on Trip Advisor.
For Munich, have a look at "Dark History Tours" for a very unique look at this city.

Many people prefer a private guide because of their particular interests can be catered to, like architecture, Jewish history, art, etc, their individual time constraints, mobility issues, or simply because they don't want to walk around with 20 people.
