We are interested in going by train to Balestrand from Bergen. How would you suggest we do that?

As an alternative to the train, we took the ferry from Bergen to Balestrand and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Train from Bergen to Myrdal to Flam and then take the ferry to Balestrand. (Part of Norway in a Nutshell) http://www.raileurope.com/europe-travel-guide/norway/map.html

My memory of the layout of the area suggests there is no train from Bergen to Balestrand - or if there is, you would have to follow a fairly absurd route to do it. The ferry is the way to go - either a shorter ferry to Flöm followed by the train, or better yet, the "fast" boat direct to Bergen. There are probably also multiple bus options. But the fjord areas of Norway have very few rail lines for obvious reasons.
