Currently in country and want to go out to the salt mine tour, and as always, the devil is in the details.
Seems the #840 bus takes 45 minutes to go the 15 miles. The train takes longer.
We are in Salzburg Old Town. I believe the bus starts at the train station on the hour, and would be in the Old Town area at :15 after the hour.
I can't figure out how to buy bus tickets, since we are not at the train station. Since covid, it doesn't seem the drivers are selling tickets. I will go to the TI tomorrow and see if they sell tickets. I'm told the tobacco shops only sell tickets for city buses.
Is www.sbb-info.at the correct site for bus info? My phone doesn't seem to like it.
Also how much time do we need once we get off the bus and get to the entrance of the mines, so I have an idea what time to buy salt mine tickets in advance.
Didn't think these details would present so many issues, but maybe it's senior brain.
Any help is greatly appreciated !
Thanks so much!
The link you have is for Swiss railways. Wrong country. Try this link - https://albus.at/de/linie-840-watzmannexpress-2020/
I’m pretty sure you can buy the 840 bus tickets from the driver.
The tourist offce n the main train station should have a combo ticket for the salt mine in Hallein - train, bus, entry, bus and train back
Stephen, we were hoping were could avoid going back to the train station, as it's a long walk or short bus ride away. It's not handy.
The bus drivers are roped off, and passengers can't enter/exit the front bus door. I'm assuming it's a covid policy. The hotel didn't think drivers are selling tickets anymore, also a covid issue.
Thx to all, I hope. the TI has the answer .
Emily,
auto correct got me and I didn't catch it-
I meant svv.
Thanks again !
If you have a smartphone you can download the Salzburg verkehr app and buy a ticket there.
The TI at Mozart plaza was most helpful . They had a schedule, knew the bus stop, said we can pay the driver directly, 6 Euros each (one-way), and advised us that there was no need to buy the salt mine tour tickets in advance.
Again, the devil is in the details.
Thanks for your help!
PS
The TI gave us faulty info- you do need to buy the timed tickets in advance !!!!
