Belgrade, Serbia

Belgrade looks beautiful, but I know very little about the country. Internet reports seem positive. My wife and her friend, mid 30's, want to take a trip there for 4 days mid Oct 15. Primarily to relax, see the city, try the local food and drink and do some shopping. Currently considering the Square Nine Hotel.

How is safety in the city generally?
How is this area of the city?
Is there a better / better located hotel we should consider?
Any particular city highlights they shouldn't miss?
What is the weather generally like in mid. Oct?
Are shops closed on Sundays?

Thank you.

Mike, i guess we will be there about a month before you get there. Staying at Townhouse 27. The trip is really one to see Dubrovnik and Kotor and Budva; ending in Budapest. The most direct way to Budapest was to fly from Podgorica and lay over a day in Belgrade so we arrive about 9 am one day and leave at 7 am the next. I will try and find this post after we get to Budapest and tell you what i found.

We also recently went to Budapest. Stayed at the lovely Buddha Bar Hotel, great part of town, great city, loved it.

Hi Mike,

I was just in Belgrade in May, and I really enjoyed it. I travelled solo and was never worried about my safety. Of course, I am always aware of my surroundings and don't carry lots of cash/valuables. Seeing the sunset near the Fortress was very nice. Church of Saint Sava is beautiful from outside...but very, simple inside (looking in construction). The museum of Yugoslav history looked interesting to me but did not have time to go.

The food and drinks were so good and so affordable. I stayed close to SKADARLIJA street and found some good restaurants on that street. It may not be for you/her but I stayed here: Hostel Indigo Skadarlija.
Yes, it is a hostel but very small and I had my own private room and location was perfect (maybe you can check location on google maps if you want to see what central means; this hostel was central). The host was very helpful and picked me up at airport for a small fee.
If your wife likes shopping she can get some good deals there! I got some nice clothes for very good prices.
The Usce shopping mall was open every days I believe.

It was already very warm in May so October may be a better month to visit. Not sure.

Enjoy!

Mike J, I understand that Budapest is sort of interesting. But i cant wait to see Belgrade. A guy at the office asked; "didn't we bomb them? sure this is a good idea?" At some point in history we bombed most of Europe for one reason or another, so what the heck......

Thanks Val, that's very helpful.

I was a little concerned at first, since Serbia rang some bells with troubles in the past, but that was many years ago and all I hear are good things now. My wife recently went to Estonia, which she loved, and my gut feel tells me Serbia will be similar... nice people, safe, simple beautiful surrounding, good food, etc.

James... I'm sure they won't hold a grudge.
