BEEF JERKY?

A lot of young people go to europe on a strict budget. This of course leads to problems with food. A lot of people dont get much protein from eating a crap load of bread and other cheap foods. Thus causes illness. Is there Beef Jerky to eat? Can't this solve the problem?

Beef jerky is very high in sodium ( salt) so hardly healthy. In fact it is constipating , not fun when travelling.
Protien readily available from cheeses and yogurts(which are very popular and common and can be purchased at almost any food store even the small ones)cheaply .

Locals can and do eat cheap and not get sick, so can a travellor it they do some research and are not close minded about their diets.

No beef jerky for you!

Just stop by the grocery store around the corner from the hostel and load up on cold cuts, cheese, bread, fruit, yogurt, maybe a tomato and cucumber. Plop yourself on a park bench in a scenic locale and have a picnic!
Alternatively, stop by the many Turkish doner kebab street kiosks. Cheap, fresh and very good doner kebabs!(fresh roasted lamb, lettuce, tomato, yogurt and cucumbers stuffed in freshly baked Arabic bread.

Beef jerky in Europe= sausage; specifically "Landjaeger"

You'll find plenty of dried sausages for sale all throughout Europe.

As a physician, let me just say this- unless you have some underlying metabolic disorder, you probably won't get sick from malnutrition in Europe.

Hey, give the guy a break. Seriously, there should be enough smoked sausages to keep you from a sudden sodium withdrawal.

To all the posters above, you are so right!

"young" and old people alike do not have to eat processed foods in Europe. There is so much variety, and it's so fresh. I cannot eat an apple here in the US....but in Europe...oh!

There are plenty of markets available to travelers to purchase lunch. Stop at a super market and purchase just a bit of meat, cheese and fruit and have a wonderful lunch or dinner.

I don't understand how eating bread can cause illness unless you are allergic to ingredients.

Give me European market food over US food anyday!

Nuts and cheese are readily available and can be fairly cheap. Beef jerky can be carried from home for emergency food. Young people often stay in hostels where a continental breadfast is served; sometimes milk is available then. Eat from grocery stores and not from restaurants for the least expensive food.

logan,

As the others have pointed out, there's no reason not to eat well while traveling in Europe. If you shop at local markets, you should be able to find lots of fresh food to fit just about any diet. Hopefully you won't have to resort to eating Beef Jerky!

Happy travels!

I plan on taking things like beef jerky and cheese when I travel. I've found that breads, grains, fruits, and so on just don't cut it when my blood sugar starts acting "goofy" (hypoglycemia) and only protein- meats, cheeses, etc. really work.
