Does anyone know of any product that can be put on a mattress to offset the effects of mattresses that are hard on the back? Maybe there's some kind of air mattress?
Thanks

I don't know of a product that you describe but I have a sensitive back and used Tiger Balm patches (adhesive) to battle the pains of a couple uncomfortable mattresses and it worked like a charm for me.
That sounds like a good idea. Thanks!
Those "heating" adhesive patches are also terrific--I just sent my 80 plus year old mom on a short trip and they were trip savers for her. I'm thinking of adding one to my "medical kit" since husband and I are not spring chickens but we still backpack in Europe.
Another really helpful response. Thanks.
I would consider taking a sleep sack (silk is lightest, but most expensive) and be prepared to sleep on the floor on top of the sheets from the bed.
You could put a Thermarest on top. They are an inflatable camping mattress that packs down quite small (depending on the thickness you choose).
Drop by your local REI or camping store and take a look at a few. If your back is very bad they may be worth carrying along.
