Bedding

Questions about most of the hotels recommended in Rick's books:

  1. Are most double rooms fitted with queen or full sized beds (perhaps king?)? I'm 6'4", so I need some sleeping space. Any tall travelers out there have any other general sleeping arrangement tips?

  2. We're going for our honeymoon and we're curious as to how well, ahem, sound insulated some of these rooms are? Are we talking paper thin walls w/30 year old squeaky beds, or something closer to US hotel "standards"? I'm sure it'll generally relate to how much we pay, and we're looking in the two star rated section of Rick's books if that helps.

I'll probably end up asking each hotel about these things before booking, but thought I'd post on here to see if there are any generalities.

Thanks!

The best answer is that it depends. For three stars and below you mostly will find either a standard double or two twins. Sometimes the two twins might be sheeted together to make a double. Four and five stars will give the bigger rooms and beds.

Generally have found the sound quality and the beds to be good. We have hit a few with thin walls but not the majority. US hotel "standards" don't apply in Europe. For the most part Americans expect a high degree of uniformity from hotel to hotel because of the chain concept. Will not find that in Europe if hanging with two and three stars. Each property is nearly unique.

Darrell,

I am 6'7" and I have never had a problem. Sometimes I have to sleep a bit diagonally or on my side with my legs drawn up (i.e. fetal position).

As mentioned a few weeks ago on this topic, bathrooms present much bigger challenges.

The smaller the hotel and older the building, the more variability you will find. I will agree that generally sound is not an issue, most of those old buildings are masonry. Beds range all over the place, higher class hotels would certainly be better, you could also consider chains like Ibis.

My son is 6' and he always has a problem. His feet always extend past the end of the bed and his sheets/blankets always get untucked. He complains about it often when we're in Europe. In my experience, doubles have standard twin mattresses either apart or pushed together. More expensive hotels we've stayed in sometimes have slightly wider twin beds and sometimes a little longer, but their double rooms are still two twin mattresses either apart or pushed together.

Husband is 6'2" and hasn't had too much of a problem, though I doubt you will find many queen size or king size beds. The only time we found beds this size was at a B&B in Bayeux and a lovely hotel in Cologne.

As far as sheets being tucked in, most hotels use duvets and therefore will not have sheets and blankets tucked in. Nor do many have footboards, so tall folks can hang their feet over the edge.

Having slept with duvets for 2 decades, I find I cannot stand sheets and blankets anymore. A duvet is much more hygenic then the bedspreads and blankets one finds in many hotels in the US. Gives me the creeps when I think about them. Especially those fuzzy blankets that always have hair stuck in the fibers. Double yuck!

In Germany and Switzerland we did have duvets and my son's feet stuck out at the end because they were never long enough, drove him crazy. In all our many trips to Italy, France, the UK and once in Amsterdam (Hotel Toren), we've always had sheets and blankets.

Ugh,, fuzzy pilly blankets do gross me out ,, prefer duvets for sure.

Hubby is 6'4",, as long as he doesn't get a bed with a foot board hes fine. He is used to his feet hanging over edges etc. Showers and tubs and the hard part as noted.

I think it may be a good idea when you book to tell they how tall you are, IN CENTIMETRES ,,, they don't do Imperial measurments. It may not always help, but they will at least understand why are you so interested in the bedding.

YOu cannot compare to US standards,, it will only dissappoint you ,, US is young country with young purpose built hotels mostly,, many places in Europe are very old and converted to hotels after the fact. Private bathrooms and elevators are often retro fitted.

If you can afford to spend the big bucks you may find a bit more of what you are used to in terms of size,, but personally I love the character of smaller hotels anyways.

Learn to have quiet sex. There, I said it.. LOL

I'm learning to appreciate duvets. Any decent hotel puts a clean cover on the duvet for each new guest, in contrast to blankets which may not be cleaned regularly. My preference is to have a top sheet, plus a duvet. Julia Chile (6'2") said her feet stuck out at the end of the bed "like gargoyles" in France.
