Bargains. Venice: Hotel Tivoli. Rome: Hotel Katty. Locations: so-so. You don't get great bargains and great locations at the same time. These are the hotels I used last fall.

I second Le finestre Sul Vaticano B&B in Rome. Look at the Heroic B & B on the graffiti wall and you'll hear more about it. Very nice people, very nice apartment, but much better experience if you don't end up other rude Americans that come in laughing loudly at 2:00 in the morning! Otherwise loved it!
Location is good, but away from much of the sites, but close to the metro. Some people say it is a 15 min walk to the Vatican, not for us! It was quite far by foot. Still good location though.
