Bavaria/Tirol Then Where?

I am planning to visit Munich, Bavaria and The Tirol (Salzburg and Innsbruck) for approximately 5-6 days in early September 2016 (based in Munich). I would like to add another destination (preferably not Germany) for another 5-6 days. I was thinking of Rome or somewhere in Italy, but am open to other countries that might be more reasonable to get to from Munich.

I was in Paris and Switzerland last year and Spain this year, so I am looking for something different.

Any suggestions are most welcome! Thanking you in advance!

You could go to Berlin. Yes, it's in Germany, but it's as different from Munich as Los Angeles is from New York City. I love it, and you won't run out of things to do.

You could look east, to Prague or Budapest. Again, not only are they quite different from Munich, but also quite different in feel from each other. You could then do day or overnight trips in the Czech Republic or Hungary.

Of course, Rome is also great. Then there's other parts of Italy...

So many options, so little time.

It's a straight shot down to Verona and Venice, two of my favorite Italian cities, from Munich.

Prague and Budapest sounds interesting. Verona and Venice sounds more interesting. I think I prefer that depending on logistics. Train to Venice but I need to return to Germany to fly home. Is this doable?

For me it would be doable. There are no change trains from Verona to Munich that take 5h and cost 39 Euros if you buy your Europe special ticket ahead of time.

Just be aware that you'll be getting on a train that says Monaco! I almost didn't get on because I didn't realize this is how Munich is spelled in Italy...

We did this route a couple of years ago and I'd do it again. Beautiful scenery.

Verona or Venice? I have always wanted to visit Venice. I never considered Verona.

Try to do both! They are so different and they each have their charms. If we are in northern Italy we go to both.

From Innsbruck it's a straight shot through the Dolomites down to Verona, Milan and Venice...easy trip, not a very long train ride, and a complete change of scenery!

Verona, Venice is possible. Both are relatively small cities so two nights in Verona and three in Venice gives you a decent visit.

I was thinking of Vienna, but you need the entire 5-6 days there. I don't think you have quite enough time to visit both Vienna and Prague. Unless you have a specific reason to see Innsbruck, you can skip that and have more time to visit better places.

Thanks All. I wanted to see Innsbruck because I hear the scenery is beautiful. Is Salzburg just as nice? I want to visit a beautiful alpine area but will not have access to a car.

Would Salzburg offer me the awesome Alps or is Innsbruck a better choice?

Innsbruck sits in an Alpine valley, whereas Salzburg lies in the forelands. But you can easily visit the mountains from either location.

I would recommend Ehenbichl in Tirol . Since there is a possibility the Ehrenberg Castle and the longest suspension bridge in Europe to visit. In the near surrounding is also the Castle Neuschwanstein. The hiking possibilities are seemingly endless. As an accommodation I would suggest the Castle Chalet in Ehenbichl. www.burgchalet.com This is AWESOME !!!

Hi Steve,

For "awesome Alps", it's Innsbruck over Salzburg, no question. Innsbruck sits among outstanding alpine scenery. You can almost touch the alps from the old town.

If you can, do the Nordkettenbahn trip that starts right outside the old town of Innsbruck, across from the Congress Hall.
