I am nailing down the end of my two week itenerary for Europe and am curious if you think I should spend 3 nights in Barcelona and 2 in Madrid or the other way around?
More questions to come!
thanks.
I would suggest spending more time in Madrid and less in Barcelona. Madrid is typically Spanish and has significant, must-see sites, such as The Prado and the Palacio Real. I’m not sure if you have the time, but Toledo is a short train ride away via AVE, as is Segovia. Even El Escorial is close by commuter train. Definitely…more time in Madrid.
I'm definitely going to get overruled here, but I suggest an extra night in Barcelona. It's got such a great unique culture and there's so much to see and do (not that there isn't in Madrid). Seeing all the Gaudi works, experiencing Catalan culture, wandering through the Barri Gotic ... anyway, that's my vote. It really comes down to your personal interests and tastes. Good luck! There's really no wrong answer ... both cities are great.
other way around- definitely spend more time in Barcelona - much nicer city, I liked it much better then Madrid.
The ramblas area though was very touristy and junky - stay in the old town of Barcelona.
I'll put in my vote for Madrid....far more things to do and experience, especially if you're looking for a 'Spanish' experience.
So that cleared it right up for you, didn't it? ;)
another vote for barcelona. all the antoni gaudi sights, the feel of the people, they are friendlier i thought. it seemed cleaner with more to do. palace in madrid is awesome, prado probably top ten in europe, not top five in my estimation.
Chantielle,
Madrid is a traditionally european city while Barcelona is more modern. Both have day trips to surrounding areas that might be worth considering before making a decision.

I find Barcelona to be a more interesting city and would personally spend more time there. But Madrid has more interesting day trip possibilities like Toledo or Segovia. It all comes down to your own interests.
Madrid: Art, palaces, conservative, great food, great day trips
Barcelona: Architecture, hip, nightlife, great tapas, beaches
