We are planning on doing a trip on our own but not sure if the logistics will be to complicated. My wife has never seen Barcelona, but we both have been in Italy many times. I can't decide if we should train it this time or rent a car. Are the distances from each city very long?

Yes, you're covering quite a bit of distance. You can see roughly how long it would take to drive between the cities at viamichelin.com. The Deutschbahn website has pretty good information on train schedules, I think all over Europe - but I haven't used it outside Germany. I'd probably approach it by either planning a lot of intermediate stops along the way or just catch a flight from Barcelona to Milan, then train or rent a car from there. If you rent in Milan, then drop in Venice, you shouldn't have to pay a large drop charge.
