Here's the problem. We fly Continental non stop to Ams but we are stopping there for a few days and then continuing on Alitalia to Rome. Continental booked us. On the return we originate in Rome on Alitalia, fly to AMS and then change in AMS for our non stop on Continental and fly home. I am unable to get the same info on checked baggage allowance for our flights. CO says ask ALitalia and vice versa. One Alitalia agent said one bag only checked on Alitalia because we are stopping and then going on from AMS and because we originate our return flight from Rome. Co says 2 bags but no one is really sure. They won't answer my emails and I would like to know if I am allowed one bag or 2 bags checked. I know Continental allows 2 bags but our stop in AMS and then the fact we begin on Alitalia seems to be the problem. Hopefully someone has some clarification for me! Please help
Actually Heath, it seems like most European airlines limit carry on weight to 13 pounds, so Alitalia is only 2 pounds off, or probably 1 kilo. It isn't much, it's true...I've barely been able to get our bags down to the 13 pound limit, I can't imagine trying to get within 11! Good luck!
An easy solution would be to plan to only check one bag per passenger, or even better, carry on! I'm sure you've seen the many posts about lost bags on Alitalia in the transportation section of this board. I don't have an answer for your question, having never flown those airlines, but it seems that packing less would solve your problem and the potential problem of lost luggage with Alitalia. Good luck!
Thanks Becca. The problem is the carryon for ALitalia is a very strict 11 lb requirement and they will not change that no matter what. I think I will have to plan on one checked bag and send everything I buy home Fed ex .
When I called Alitalia to inquire about the 11lb limit... they said that they do not weigh the bags. But I'm going to make my bag as light as I can just so that it doesn't look like I'm carrying a heavy bag. It does seem like a silly limit... 11lbs when everyone else is 26.
Well I can tolerate the 11 lb carry on but the checked baggage is my problem. I still can't get a handle on what I can take because of my lay over in Ams.
Barbara,
After I learned from Terry from Bend that in spite of purchasing our tickets through Northwest when there is a connecting European airline, sometimes we will have to abide by their rules. So I went on KLM and checked their requirements; it took a lot of wading through their site. So I would suggest going to the Alitalia site.
I just now went on their site....checked can only be 20kgs and carry-on 5 kgs, length 55cm, height 25cm and depth 35cm.
Thanks Darcy,
I can deal with the weight restrictions , its the clarification on how many bags I can take from AMS to Rome that is the read problem. If the flight resumption is considered an inter Europe flight I can only have one checked bag. If it is considered an international flight from Houston I am allowed 2 bags. That is the real problem.. In effect I could leave the US with 2 checked bags stop in AMS for a few days and then only be allowed 1 bag. It does not sound correct and that is why I am looking for some clarification . Yesterday I was read the interline baggage agreement and it said that you are subject to the originating carriers baggage requirments until you reach you first destination and stay overnight. After that you are subject to their baggage rules. Can you see how confusing it is? I have lots of people trying to solve this but in the end I think the agent at the counter will have to make the final determination and the overage charges are pretty high
Barbara, maybe you answered your own question. You said that the agreement states that you abide by the originating carrier's rules "until you...stay overnight". If you are staying in Amsterdam for a few days, then you are staying overnight. The next flight would be a separate flight even if you booked them at the same time, it would seem to me.
Hi Nancy,
You may be correct. The problem is not everyone at either airline seems to agree on the baggage rules and that is the problem. I will just plan on the minimum requirement and remember not to fly Alitalia in the future.
