I am having trouble finding baggage which fits Ryan Air requirements. It is basically 21 x 14 x 8. Has anyone ever used Rick Steve’s travel bag of 21x14x9 with them?
Can you find out what type of plane will be used on the route? I just flew Alitalia and my bag was slightly bigger than the stated size limits (also taller). But my bag fit in the overhead and I did not have a problem from the airline.
The problem with Ryan Air occurs at checkin and not on the plane. You bag will be checked at check-in.
Ryan Air make their money from their extra charges, such as checked baggage that doesn’t meet their size requirements. They are not renowned for their generosity. I have seen them regularly check bag size.
Depending on how full the flight is, you may be lucky and not have your bag measured or weighed, but it is much cheaper to check in a bag online in advance than pay at the airport.
If the allowed dimensions are 21 x 14 x 8 and your bag is 21 x 14 x 9, the solution is simple - at least in theory: Simply don't fill it all the way. This depends on a high-degree of self-control. In my experience, most people will fill their bag, whatever size that is.
I would not count on Ryanair - or any low cost airline - to cut any slack with regard to bag dimensions/weight. I always figure they will be strict.
In cm it's 55 x 40 x 20 for Ryanair carry-ons. There is a weight constraint as well (10 kg.)
21 x 14 is slightly under 55 x 40 cm... but 8" is slightly OVER 20 cm.
Try the Hynes Eagle 38L, or maybe one of the Cabin Max models... this one actually has the dimensions in cm decorating the outside of the bag!!

I always pay to check our bags. Never any problem.

Hah - that's great.
I wonder if you could get custom embroidery on it that says "Hey, it fits! Go ahead, I DARE you to measure it!"
Many focus on bag size, and while that is important, look at the weight. Will you really be under 22 lbs? Will you really have only one additional item 8x8x14? I usually travel light, but am over the 22 lbs and I always have a day bag bigger than the small item.
Do yourself a favor. Book your ticket, pay for a checked bag, 25 euro if picked at booking and size is less of an issue, and also pick priority boarding for 5 euro, that will allow you to take a day bag on with you.
Many people get cheap and try to squeeze in, it only ends up badly and expensive.
IThank you for your reply. I do understand the weight problem and 25 euros are not too much to pay but we are taking at least 5 trips on Ryan Air and that amount gets a little expensive when traveling with 4 people each way.
For a family of four I tend to check one suitcase and have three carry on. Sometimes this means buying the 3 and 1 tickets separately.
look at total cost compared to other methods, if a ticket with the extra 30 euro is still less than other options, don't sweat it, just spring for it. It will only take one person with a couple more souveniers to wreck any savings you are trying to gain.
Also, be aware, if you do not get priority booking, your "carry-on" goes in the hold, not in the cabin.
It's Ryan Air. When you buy your itinerary online, pay to check that bag on all legs of that trip. That is the cheapest way of traveling with that bag. If they take it from you at the airport to check, you will pay dearly.
