Baggage handling

We are going to try the trains in Italy for the first time. When traveling across the country -- say from Rome to Venice -- and wanting to stop in the middle for some sightseeing during the day, what do you do with your suitcases? Are there places in the train stations to lock them up?

David is entirely correct that most "MAJOR" train stations have lockers or an agent you can pay and leave your luggage with. However, it sounds like you might be using a smaller train station. If so, you might not have the option of leaving luggage.

Yes. Most major train stations (and many smaller ones as well) have either baggage lockers or luggage check counters (Look for "Left Luggage" information, that is the British term for checking luggage).

I just did that exact trip - check Rick's book on Italy, he gives good information on various cities, the train stations and if they have baggage storage or not. The book was extremely helpful to us, we didn't go anywhere without it!
