Backpacking Itinerary.

Alright, so my boyfriend and I are backpacking for 2months around Europe this May/June09. I realize that most of the people on this board aren't of the backpacking variety, however I have found tons of helpful information on this site and figure you guys might have something helpful for me too. Here gos.

Frankfurt - 3days
Augsburg - 3 Days
Munich - 4 days (inc. daytrips to Dachau and neuschwanstein)
Prague - 3 days
Berlin - 4 days
Amsterdam - 3 days (inc. half day in Kinderdijk)
Paris - 4 days (inc. day trip to Versailles)
London - 3 days
Madrid - 5 days (inc. day trips to Toldeo and Segovia)
Barcelona - 4 days
Nice - 2 days
Cinque Terre (Vernazza) - 3 days
Florence - 3 days (inc. day trip to Siena)
Venice - 2 days
Rome - 4 days
Sorrento - 3 days (inc. day trips to Capri & Pompei)
Corfu - 3 days
Athens - 1 night
Santorini - 4 days
Athens - 2 days

The reason for visiting Frankfurt and Augsburg in Germany is because I have family there that would murder me if I crossed the pond and didn't pay a visit =P Secondly, these are FULL days that we are spending in each place. If you add up all the days, they dont add up to 70 (which is the amount of day we are spending in Europe in total) There are about 6 or 7 days not included in our itinerary in order to spend an extra day in a place we really enjoy, and to account for travel time/delays etcetc. We are travelling by rail for the entire trip other than a flight from London to Madrid, and the ferries in Greece. We've decided to go with the 5country youth select pass, so we'll have to watch our travel days carefully.

If this seems too rushed, let me know. Also, if there are any interesting day trip in any of the places that you think there might be time for, let me know. Thank you again for any and all help !!!!

Sorry for the length !!

You will cover a lot of ground.

The suggestion I would make is to do a dry run before you leave. Check schedules here to decide which train, plane or bus you will catch to get to each destination. What time do you have to be at the station? What time do you need to be out of your hotel? When/where will you eat (doesn't have to be as specific as what restaurant, just general like eat lunch on the train - need to get food before we board)? What time will you arrive? How long will it take to get to your lodging? It will help you keep your plans realistic.

The most overlooked aspect of a trip IMO is the travel time to get to the next destination. It can really take people by surprise and put major dents in your site seeing, if you haven't planned for it. The time you budget in each place isn't bad but will shrink after you factor in your travel.

Also think of some basic necessities such as an occasional morning or evening at a laudromat. I always try to make my laundry time as productive as possible by making calls, eating a picnic meal or using the internet while I'm laundering without leaving my clothes unattended.

Check for European budget airlines for some of the larger hops to save time and possibly money.

I would also want to spend more time in Prague, as there are many things you can do outside of the city as well.

I think that it is completely doable especially since you have allotted a few days for travel delays (rail strikes are a real possibility). THe only thing that I would do would be to cut out London and save it for another trip. But if it is important that you see it, by all means do it. I would rather feel a bit rushed than regret not seeing it.
Have fun!!

Thanks for all of your replies.

I agree on the cutting London part out. I went to London on a whirlwind school trip a few years ago, and don't really have any desire to see it. However, this is my boyfriends first trip out of N. America, and he says he cannot miss it.

Also the tip on doing a dry run of the trip is a good idea .. I will be doing that as it gets closer to the trip. I've already calculated the amount of time it takes to get to each place on a train through www.bahn.de so it looks like I'm half way there anyways.

Thanks again !!! =)

I can only answer about Frankfurt and Berlin. While in Berlin, go to Potsdam and to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. There are tons of things to see in Berlin. I can't wait to go back. Try www.insidertour.com for some great walking tours and with enthusiastic, passionate guides. Frankfurt also is way more interesting than its reputation. Wonderful museums all along the river bank, the cathedral where the Holy Roman Emperors were elected and crowned, a very moving Holocaust Memorial wall with 11,000 names of Frankfurts Jewish citizens who were murdered by the nazis, and well, I could go on and on. If you want to know more, just ask me!

Good advice by the others.

You are definitely covering a lot of ground.

I think the two biggest things that stick out is that you are on such a schedule.

Venice to Rome is a some distance that will definitely be eaten up by travel time.

You will be exhausted by the time you ferry to Greece that it may almost be worth your while to either use that week to supplement your time in the other countries especially when you meet other travellers and hear about a must see place or just fly there.

i've done two major European backpacking trips where a lot of it was serendipity. A plan is nice but flexibility is even nicer.

In response to the last post, the number of days that I have given are a rough plan. If we really hate a place, we'll leave early. If we love it, we'll stay a bit longer. That's why we've left around 6-7 days in order to be able to do this. One of the things that Im looking forward to the most is just being able to sit in a city, people watching and munching on a terribley cheap, but somehow fufilling lunch. We've also left the extra days in case we come across other backpackers who highly reccomend going to a different city. =)
