We will be in a few locations around Europe during this time, germany, czech republic, netherlands, UK...I was wondering if any locals knew of some large events going on that we should try to attend, or get tickets for before we leave? I am willing to fly over to another country and take one off my list if it's really cool!
I would do a google search for 'Christmas events Berlin' and same for other cities. You should find many of them for each city you will visit.
Since this is the holiday period, don't expect huge outdoor festivals, because most folks are at home enjoying the days off. (Austria and Hungary celebrate not only Dec 25 but also Dec 26). Instead I would seek out the many local celebrations of the season and then hit a large city for Sylvester Night (New Year's Eve to you). The local customs are most pronounced in Alpine countries and rural areas, because in cities they have been understandably watered down or are absent.
From St. Stephens (Dec 26) to Epiphany (Jan 6) there are religious and secular events galore, even in the Protestant countries (NL, GB, and parts of CZ)
Depending on your mood and pocket book, you may also luck out and attend a formal ball during these days. Otherwise, enjoy the very festive treats and take in the music and performances of this pre-Carnival period.
I have not personally gone (yet), but it is supposed to be quite the event. How about Hogmanay in Edinburgh? Dec 29 to Jan 1

Cheers.
