Where are the best places in Germany and Austria to see fall foliage and when are the leaves at their peak?

My suggestion would be Bavaria and the Salzkammergut region of Austria (especially Hallstatt). I'm not sure when the leaves will be "at their peak", but that will probably be happening about now!

We saw some nice colors at Neuschwanstein in mid-October. Each year the peak changes a little so it's hard to plan for.
