We are going to Vienna and Salzburg the first week of May. I was thinking of going to Luzern, Interlaken and Gimmelwald the second week but am now concerned that the views wont be very good and the trails muddy at that time of year in Switzerland. How is the Czech Republic at that time of year? Any other suggestions for that second week? Spent 3 weeks in Bavaria last year and would like to go someplace new.
As long as you are in Austria, why not investigate The Wachau area, Durnstein and Melk, not to mention Aggstein ruins.

There is also Graz or Linz area. Seefeld, Mayerhofen are also very nice. You could also check out the Dolomite area in Sud-Tirol in Northern Italy.. Bozen, Trento, or Lake Garda area.

Well i doubt that the general weather conditions will be much better in Austria than Switzerland... But that aside the general alpine terrain is going to be very similar so including both on the same trip might be a bit too much. Austria is definitely cheaper so i would go with Austria and consider the Czech Republic as your second destination.
