August- Rick's First Stop

On the Monday Night Zoom show Rick Steves stated he loves doing the shows, talked up the rest of the shows scheduled for July....then said they were taking the month off August off, back in September. So no Monday night Zoom shows in August..... Yeah, ok. So Rick is just gonna sit around Washington State and twiddle his thumbs for a month?

I suspect not. So what else could cause Rick to miss an entire month of Monday night shows ...... maybe something like being out of town...in say Europe.... That is my bet.

So his first destination will be???? My guess is France to hook up with his buddy Steve Smith and see how Paris is doing and if late fall tours can run...then probably off to Rome to see Ben and Francesca and how Rome looks for late fall tours.

Your guess?

Indeed, onefastbob, that makes a lot of sense. We shall see!

Nancy, not to argue fine points but Rick has clearly not said NO to 2021 tours. On the Tour front page he notes what he has said on Zoom shows…almost totally no but leaving the door open a crack. He has cancelled ALL tours through October. He doubts fall tours but ….. the door is open. The tour page states he hopes to have a final decision by July 31st. Sooo that decision should be made before he sneaks off in August….but…..

Not an argument when it is a statement of facts....maybe....:)

"What about 2021? We've canceled through Oct. We'll make a final decision for Nov. and Dec. by July 31."
Rick Steves

Now I will make an argument that I think he might push that final decision date out a week....His last Monday Zoom Show is 7/26.... he can be in Paris on the 28th.

Further argument: He held a few tours in 2020 before the big shut down (several early tours were mid-tour when it happened). The man wants bragging rights (can't blame him a bit)...If he can get in a few tours (Best of Paris, Best of Rome) over Christmas he will have held tours in 2021...thus never totally missing a tour season.... and dang-those be rare tour patches!

I don’t think at all that he would be leading a tour in August. But I do think it’s highly possible he could go do some on-the-ground research.

In his July email, Rick said they "might" add some November and December 2021 tours -- will decide in August. And on this Monday Night program he indicated he would be meeting with tour guides in Europe during August.

Missed that, thanks for the confirmation!!

I'd say he is more likely to be in the countries with easy access re: entry, high popularity on his tours, and where he can most effectively/efficiently assess the situation on the ground. Since he likely has the most guides in places like France and Italy, those are my bets.

From September 2021 tour news (I couldn't believe my eyes):
Imagine riding the escalator up from the Métro, turning the corner, and seeing the Eiffel Tower rocketing joyfully into the sky for the very first time. Imagine sharing that experience with your mother. I did that as a 14-year-old in 1969 and it's a memory I've treasured ever since. I did the same thing with my girlfriend last month — creating a bevy of rich memories.

I first heard it on an interview Rick did with the folks who have a blog called “Rick Steves over Brunch.” He mentioned that he was hoping to do the mountain hiking tour around Mount Blanc. Then on the most recent Monday night travel he mentioned that he had, indeed done that, as well as visited Paris.
