Au revoir, George Whitman.

Au revoir. End of an era. I never walk past the place without stopping in. And I usually end up picking up some yellowing out-of-print paperback. I enjoy the smell and feel of old bookstores and his was a nice one. It kinda felt like one last quivering link to the bohemian expat Paris of our imaginations. Bon voyage! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/8959555/George-Whitman.html Did anyone ever stay there? Or know someone who did?

Lovely article. There are more articles on line and several photos taken upstairs. This was a favorite stop for me while living in Paris for many years during the 1970s, a place to recharge American and English literature and be able to speak some English with other ex-pats and visitors. I always wondered who the older woman was sitting next to George at the desk in the shop. Does anyone know? I say older as he was in his fifties back then, she seemed about the same agethis from the point of view of a single woman in her twenties.

Thank you for posting the link, Thomas. I even printed it off to save in my "library". This is definitely the end of an era. Now I feel I must hurry back to Paris just to visit Shakespeare & Co!
