Attention to pre-existing travel insurance

You will not find a company that will waive or ignore pre-existing conditions. It is an inherent part of their assessment of the risk of insuring someone.

Depending on the nature and extent of the condiitons, companies will charge more to insure you. Or decide not to insure you at all - which is what happened to me when our annual policy came up for renewal. I know from a discussion on another forum that it is an increasing issue of companies declining to insure folk.

So, it becomes a matter of finding a more specialist company that is prepared to take you on. The Money Saving Expert has a good article on the whole subject - https://www.rcnguide.com/insurance/travel-insurance-for-pre-existing/

We were able to get covered by Staysure. They offered a 15 month policy taking into account all our various conditions and including cruise cover (we have one booked for next year). Cost for the two of us was just under £1000.

Many travel insurance policies with include a waiver of pre-existing condition exclusions IF you buy the policy within a specified time after your first payment toward a trip—-usually 10 to 14 days. That is what we do, and it is no more expensive than the same policy would cost if purchased later.

I don't if its the same in the USA - but I've also had an insurance company cancel our policy (and refund) - pre travel because the pre-existing condition changed, and they were no longer prepared to take the risk (even with a higher premium). This was a few weeks before travel and it was stressful finding a different insurer.

I actually check the trip is insurable for us now before I make non-refundable bookings

What is it with insurance companies anymore not wanting to take any risk? I thought that's what they were for (speaking as the wife of a lifetime insurance man who ditched the business earlier than he had planned to partly because of this very issue.)
