Attention : France- Germany border checks next week

Starting this Friday, 27 Mar. until April 4, border checks will be in effect again for Germany and France.

Carrying a Passport or ID card (Personalausweis) will be necessary. It always is when crossing borders, but now they will be checked.
Border police are stepping up checks due to the up coming NATO meet in Strasbourg and Baden-Baden. Concerns are focused on violent protesters on there way to the meet. Seaports will also be under heightened scrutiny. Authorities are asking everyone to be patient at the borders because longer waits might not be avoidable.

For those that have lived in Europe for a few years, border checks have been a thing of the past since 1985 because of the Schengen Agreement. Exceptions can be made if there is a heightened security risk to the nation concerned.

Another addition for those who were thinking about traveling in this area this weekend. Especially those who were going to drive into Baden-Baden or Strasbourg.

Many businesses are closed during the NATO time. Thursday and Friday lots of businesses are closed in Baden-Baden and the A5 and B500 (the main roads in this area) are closed.

I was crossing from Saarbrücken (Saarland, Germany) to Forbach (Lorraine, France) on Saturday and the French border patrol going into France was really tough. Unfortunately they were "racially profiling" which means they really pulled over every car with Turkish or Middle Eastern looking people and just waved by cars with more Central European looking people. Crossing back into Germany was rathery easy as it seemed German border patrol were only interested in vans rather than in passenger cars.
