It's an extra layer of safety that Europe is embracing in a big way.

Little conveniences like buying Metro passes and using the automated kiosk to print up pre-paid theater tickets we're not available to me through my old-school, U.S. credit card.

Yes, I discovered that years ago in Sweden, where they asked me to enter my credit card pin when buying bread at a grocery store. Luckily I did know my pin since I was also depending on that card for emergency ATM cash advances if necessary.
