ATM in Ireland

When Euros are withdrawn from the ATM's in Ireland what denomination of bills do you receive? Are they in large bills that need to be 'broken' into smaller bills somewhere else? I have heard that it is not recommended to carry large 'bills' and that some merchants will only accept the smaller denominations. Thanks

Like most ATMs we used in Europe, large bills were standard issue. And, yes, it was sometimes a challenge to find places to break them. In Dublin it wasn't such a problem, the rest of the time we looked for opportunities where we could (supermarkets, hotel desks). It's not freakishly problematic, but it can be a little awkward.

It would depend on how much you were taking out. I mostly carried cash and credit cards, but did get money out of the ATM several times. As I recall, I didn't get anything larger than a 20 euro bill when getting out 100 euros. If you were taking out 300 euros, you might get a different mix of bills.

That is a very good question.

I've not been able to find a bank in Ireland that gives less than 50 euro notes, and they can be a problem. Not in Dublin - everything there is so expensive that the 50's disappear - but in other places.

I have seen certain banks in France that give you smaller denominations, but have not found one in Ireland. If anyone knows of one, that would be valuable info.

We almost always received a combination of €10 and €20. We never had a problem with buying something like a bottle of water and getting the change we needed. Personally I tried to use the €20 first.
