ATM card types in UK

Last time I visited the UK, they were in the process of migrating to the smart-card chipped models. Should I expect to have any problems using a NA issued magnetic strip ATM/CC in the UK? If so, are there any ways to get a smart-card model from a NA based bank? Didn't see this particular issue in any of the questions, and can't find a specific answer in searching the web.

Yes, in unmanned gas stations if you're renting a car. That's where we've had the most reports of problems in this regard. Some reports of problems with automatic train ticket machines, but there you can usually find a human to swipe the card manually. We have not had any reports here of someone being able to get a smart-card chip card from a NA bank.

I recently received a new debit card from Washington Mutual. It has a pay pal logo on the front with a symbol that looks like sound waves coming out of a speaker. Is that the same thing?

I haven't really paid attention because I haven't needed it.
